Hello, person reading this! It’s 2025 and, if you’re anything like me, you have things you want to accomplish this year. This year feels a little different for me, however, because I have almost the same goals that I had last year, only it’s not that I didn’t do them, it’s that I want to improve them. Last year, I really focused on improving my overall health as much as I could. I did succeed, but there were things and times where I knew I could do better. This post was triggered by me wanting to get out of the holiday indulgence of sweets, little to no exercise and a wack sleep schedule. Since the middle/end of November, I started slacking on my usual healthy diet. That was the big one, because food can either be helpful or hurtful to your overall health. Once I started slacking on food, it snowballed into everything else. I found myself staying up past 1 am, not drinking the normal amount of water, and walking for exercise less. I’m still at this point and I’m getting tired of it. If you are also someone who did amazing at accomplishing a health goal for most of the year, fell off towards the end, and is finally wanting to come back to doing right for yourself again, this post is for you:
HOW TO GET BACK INTO HEALTHY HABITS
- Identify Your Goals~ What do you feel you’ve been lacking in? What can you do to stop lacking (or at least improve on)?
- Don’t Start at Extremes~ If you’ve been eating junk food a lot and want to eat healthier, I wouldn’t suggest starting cold turkey on a strict diet. Start by drinking more water, then eating more veggies, then walking more, then starting to do a little weight/strength training, then cutting down an hour of screen time before bed than usual (sleep can affect your digestive system). It’s okay to start small, because that’s how you form habits.
- Minimize “Less” and “Stop”~ When you don’t succeed at NOT doing something, it can make you feel more discouraged and not want to try anymore. Build what you want to do MORE of and what you want to START doing. In my mind, it’s easier to do something than to resist doing something else. Through this practice, those old habits will start to not make sense anymore with the new ones you’re forming, and you may be more inclined to let them go.
- DON’T Be Hard on Yourself~ Don’t get upset if you don’t fall immediately back into place. Instead, make little mental (or digital/physical) notes of what you did accomplish throughout the day/week to log improvements. You will likely be more successful in your goals if you make a habit of keeping score of when you did the right thing for yourself.
I hope this post helped someone who knows they have it in them to maintain a goal, even if they fell off for a little bit. I also hope this post inspires someone to take a leap of confidence in accomplishing a certain goal for the first time. I’ve been there. Starting is always the hardest part. But with these tips, I hope it can become a bit easier.
Happy New Year everyone, and thanks for reading!
